Tree House near New York City, NY
The front half of this tree house was supported by white cedar logs grown near the Catskill Mountains, about 3 hours from New York City, NY. The bracing supports were the branches from the two logs that were harvested. The log facades were scraps from the milling process of other trees. All in all, little was wasted and the look is very rustic and natural. The back half of the tree house was attached with two beams rather than one because of the shape of the tree. The beams were attached to the tree with artificial limbs, cables, chain, and brackets. Together this tree house was strong enough to hold all the kids you could fit up there jumping and playing around. The siding was red cedar boards, and the roofing is Ondura, which comes in 8 different color choices.
Designing the Tree House around the Tree
These clients had other trees, but most were too small or too close to property lines to use for the tree house. Norway maples do tend to spread out with multiple leaders opening up like the palm of a hand. This tree previously had a large lead removed, which opened up the center and gave us the opportunity to recess the tree house several feet further into the center of the tree without any trunks passing through the house. The second level was set back even farther so that the kids could reach out of the second floor to touch the tree trunk. Lastly, a bird feeder was set on a nearby limb, as the family enjoyed watching the birds and the second floor lookout was well suited as a partial bird blind.
