Tree House Near Philadelphia, PA
We had a lot of fun with this treehouse. For a treehouse so close to the city of Philadelphia, it may seem a bit out of place to design a rustic treehouse with adirondack siding and natural log spindles. But perhaps it's part of the mystery of it. Now the kids can go hide and play in the back woods without driving anywhere. Since the neighbors are close on one side, we got their permission ahead of time. Otherwise, due to the strict zoning laws in the Philadelphia area, we would not have been able to build so close to the fence. Although not shown here, we went back 6 months later and added two more windows for more light inside. Usually more windows is better because it reminds you that you're up in a tree and have a great view.
Single Tree Treehouse
It is very common to build a small treehouse on a single tree. When the tree is near the center of the structure, the weight is balanced and the knee braces and cables are viewed more as stabilizing than supporting structures. The tree must have a lot of space to grow, and this particular radial spoke method is pretty good at that because the spokes can be cut away from the tree as it grows, until they reach the end of the bolt, which is a long time, and even then there are other options. This tree had been raised before we got there, but generally it isn't good to cut all of the lower branches out of the tree unless they are dead already. But it did make it easier to build.
